10. Frozen 2013

Frozen

Frozen is a great children's animated favourite that tells the story of Anna who sets off on a journey with her friend Kristoff, voiced by Jonathan Groff and his trusty reindeer Sven to find her sister Elsa who has run away. Elsa, voiced by Idina Menzel, possesses mystical powers and has trapped the kingdom of Arundell in a permanent winter state, while it's up to this brave pair to battle through frozen conditions while encountering all kinds of obstacles in order to save the day.

Anna, voiced by Kristen Bell meets Olaf, an amazingly funny snowman along with a variety of mystical trolls, while once she reaches the icy castle where her sister is hiding Elsa hits Anna in the heart as she loses control of her powers and Anna can only be saved by true love. Will she survive and how?

Frozen is a musical extravaganza with a fantastic sound track that kids love. This movie would seem to attract girls but in our experience little boys love the movie equally. Olaf the singing snowman, voiced by Josh Gad, is a particular favourite. If your children have yet to see Frozen then they are in for a real treat. Frozen from Disney Store it will make a great stocking filler for the kids this Christmas.

9. Love Actually 2003

Love Actually

Those of us who love Rom Coms never tire of watching Love Actually as it has tons of romance combined with plenty of comedy all mixed together in a typically English film about the love lives of eight different couples. One such couple is Hugh Grant, who plays the Prime Minister and Martine McCutcheon who plays his cleaning lady. In the end these two get together in a typical "Pretty Woman" type scenario the ladies love.

All the couples are loosely connected with one character being central to them all, namely Billy Mack who is played by the superb Bill Nighy. The film has some very funny moments while the couples fall in love, fall out of love and any number of scenarios that a funny romance can muster. The movie is packed with famous names such as Liam Neeson and Colin Firth, along with Emma Thompson and Laura Linney.

Love Actually, is set in London during the lead up to Christmas, while with a bucket load of snow thrown in for good seasonal measure it's a great romantic comedy to cuddle up to on those dark winter evenings.

8. Elf 2003

Elf

Elf is a sort of Tarzan type tale (Tarzan was raised by apes) where Buddy a human that was brought up by elves goes to New York in search of his real father. Buddy's father is the hapless Walter Hobbs who Santa knows is not the nicest of human beings plus he doesn't know that Buddy was even born!

Naturally Buddy has some exciting experiences ahead as he searches for his father in the big apple, while there are some very funny moments that will have you laughing out loud. Buddy is childish in his ways making him an endearing character that none the less rubs people up the wrong way as they don't understand him.

A fabulous cast along with a hilarious script makes this great Christmas comedy a must see movie. Cast members include Will Ferrell as Buddy, James Caan as Walter his father, Edward Asner as Santa and Mary Steenburgen as Emily.

7. Gremlins 1984

Gremlins

Gremlins is a real Christmas favourite that all the family can enjoy although really small children may find it a little scary in parts. Gremlins tells the story of Billy who receives a special present for Christmas from his dad in the shape of a Mogwai that his father bought from a shop in China Town.

The Mogwai is the cutest little furry thing ever but he does come with a warning. In fact he comes with three warnings. Do not feed him after midnight, don't get him wet and keep him away from bright lights. Billy inadvertently gets the Mogwai wet and lets him eat after midnight too resulting in the creature replicating over and over again.

A room full of cute little Mogwai's would be fine but these creatures are Gremlins and they have come to wreak havoc on the town big style. What happens when the Gremlins get loose is very funny and it takes Billy, played by Zach Galligan, along with girlfriend Kate, played by Phoebe Cates, to save the day if they can.

6. Home Alone 1990

Home Alone

Imagine being an eight year old boy looking forward to spending Christmas in Paris with your family. Imagine discovering that they have actually gone away without you and left you home alone at the mercy of two bungling robbers! This is what happens to Kevin, played by Macaulay Culkin, in the movie Home Alone.

Kevin is no ordinary little boy, he is very resourceful and sets all kinds of hilarious traps for the robbers who soon realise that breaking into this house is not going to be a walk in the park. Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern play the robbers and provide a whole host of laughs as they attempt to foil Kevin and his plans.

Booby traps such as the swinging hot iron that slams into the face of one of the robbers are really funny, while viewers just know that whatever they try they won't outwit Kevin. Home Alone is a must buy movie as it's a  fabulous Christmas comedy that stands the test of time being just as popular with viewers now as it was back in 1990 when it was released.

5. Bad Santa 2003

Bad Santa

If your illusion regarding Santa has not been shattered already it will be when you see this bad Santa in action as he moves from store to store with his trusty safe cracking elf side kick. This pair takes advantage of their Santa/Elf roles every year in order to steal from the stores they work in over the festive season. Then along comes a little boy who begins to make Bad Santa feel a little Christmassy. How will Santa react to these new feelings?

Bad Santa, is a really funny movie but does have a softer, "let's think about the true meaning of Christmas" side to it too. Billy Bob Thornton plays a great Bad Santa, while the child is played by Brett Kelly who is an unhappy kid who pesters Santa and begins to soften Santa's grumpy exterior.

Bad Santa is not a children's Christmas movie by any stretch of the imagination as it has bad language, sexual overtones and moderate violence which doesn't sound too Christmassy does it? This movie is one for us adults and is a different take on the usual Santa movie, which for us made a refreshing and very funny change!

4. Trading Places 1983

Trading Places

Trading Places is another superb Christmas comedy film that fans of funny won't want to miss. This eighties movie never fails to please and is packed with a whole host of stars.

Duke and Duke are commodities brokers who employ Louis Winthorpe, played by Dan Aykroyd, in their successful company. One day the Dukes, played by Ralph Bellamy and Don Ameche, make a bet as to whether it’s nurture or nature that makes a man succeed in his job. They connive to replace Winthorpe with street con man Billy Ray Valentine, played by Eddie Murphy.

The result of the two men's turn around in fortunes is really funny with Winthorpe becoming the tramp and Billy Ray becoming the Dukes new best employee. Set around Christmas time through to the New Year we see Winthorpe and Billy Ray join forces to beat the Dukes at their own game.

Jamie Lee Curtis is excellent as hooker Ophelia, while she becomes the love interest of Winthorpe and also helps with the planned revenge. Denholm Elliot plays the butler who is also in on the plan and is a willing participant. If you haven't seen Trading Places then you really must as you are missing a real treat. Filled with laughs and great one liners.

3. National Lampoons Christmas Vacation 1989

Christmas Vacation

The National Lampoon movies have long become family favourites with the Christmas Vacation edition being no exception. Chevy Chase once again plays hapless Clark Griswald with Beverley D'Angelo as his long suffering wife Ellen. Clark wants to organise the best Christmas ever with all the family invited to celebrate the festive season at the Griswald family home.

We just know that it won't go to plan and it doesn't, which bodes well for an hilarious couple of hours viewing where what can go wrong inevitably does. Clark is buying Christmas on the strength of his expected bonus payment from his boss which is his first big mistake as when the cheque arrives it's a pittance!

When Clark erects over twenty thousand Christmas lights on his house exterior plus buys a tree that he can't even get through the door some hilarious antics ensue. In fact there are some very funny moments throughout the film with bumbling Clark carrying on regardless none the less. Christmas Vacation is well worth watching. It is rumoured the couple may reunite for a Christmas Vacation sit com, let's wait and see, sounds good to us!

2. A Christmas Story 1983

A Christmas Story

Many of us can recall how much we wanted a certain toy for Christmas when we were kids? Nine year old Ralphie is no exception as all he wants for Christmas is a Red Ryder Range Shot 200 BB Gun but poor Ralphie comes up against huge opposition in the form of his mother, his teacher and even Santa himself who all yell "You will shoot your eye out" in response to his request.

Does Ralphie get his dream present in the end? Maybe! Those who haven't seen this great comedy Christmas movie need to make some time for it ahead of any other christmas indulgence. Set in the 1940's, this movie stars Peter Billingsley as Ralphie, Jeff Gillen as Santa and Melinda Dillon as Ralphie's mum. Jean Shepherd narrates the action, while the movie is based on his memoirs.

A Christmas Story, one of the most favoured Christmas comedies among viewers, features some great funny moments, while creating empathy moments for viewers who have ever suffered at the hands of a bully. Ralphie is an amazing character who not only has to deal with the bullies but the constant bickering of his parents. Maybe that's why we really want him to get what he so wants for Christmas!

1. Scrooged 1988

Scrooged

The story of Ebenezer Scrooge is probably one of the most read and acted of all the Christmas classics. A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens tells the story of Scrooge the miser who hates Christmas and holds it in very low regard, as he does his friends, colleagues and relatives. Scrooged is a modern day depiction of Scrooge that is very well written and is also very funny indeed.

Scrooged stars Bill Murray as miserable, offensive TV executive Frank Cross who is visited by three spirits, one from the past, one from the present and one from the future. Frank has lost contact with his brother, treats his staff like dirt plus has no Christmas spirit at all. We see as the story plays out that Frank had a miserable childhood which probably made him into the person he is today but as in the original story there is hope!

Scrooged has some great comedy moments such as when his dead boss appears to warn him that the ghosts will be coming or the crazy ghost of Christmas Present who constantly whacks him about the head. Frank's love interest is played by Karen Allen who split with Frank due to his selfishness but who now offers him a life line. Bill Murray is at his comedy best in this movie that provides laughs galore so why not get Christmas off to a hilarious start.
